The company has expanded its executive team, appointing Emma Halpern as Managing Director and Tracy Liz Miller as Director of Education

As its 20th Anniversary season approaches, Saratoga Shakespeare Company (SSC) has hired two new key personnel, Managing Director Emma Halpern and Director of Education Tracy Liz Miller. Halpern and Miller will be working closely with Executive & Artistic Director Marcus Dean Fuller to support the company’s ambitious plans for growth. “As the only professional theatre company in Saratoga, SSC serves a critical need in the community,” said Halpern. “I am thrilled to join Marcus and the Board in this next chapter of the organization’s history, and to demonstrate through our work just how innovative, relevant, and accessible Shakespeare can be. I’m equally excited to support Tracy as she develops the Professional Training Program and creates a robust educational environment for young theatre professionals.”

“Students in the Professional Training Program will have a rich experience where they will learn to navigate a career in the arts while deepening their skill set, readying them for the next stage of their careers,” Miller added. “I’m passionate about working with emerging artists, and am so appreciative to have the opportunity to do so at SSC. The next generations are the key to a healthy, inclusive field and I can’t wait to see what they will create.”

Halpern is the former Co-Artistic Director of New York City Children’s Theater (NYCCT), where for the last ten years, she served as a producer and dramaturg on over 20 off-Broadway productions, including 17 world premieres. She also managed NYCCT’s 2014 name change and re-branding project, and oversaw the company’s new works initiatives. As an arts journalist, Halpern has contributed regularly to American Theatre magazine, the leading publication for the American nonprofit theatre, where she has published over 30 articles and interviewed over 75 theatre professionals. She holds a B.A. in English from Rutgers University and a M.F.A. in Dramaturgy from Brooklyn College, where she has taught as an adjunct lecturer in the M.F.A. Performing Arts Management Program.

Miller comes to SSC with extensive experience as an actor, producer, director, and educator. She is the Co-Founder of Pawling Theatre Exchange and Co-Founding Producing Artistic Director of The Bridge Initiative: Women in Theatre. She serves on the theatre faculty of Western Connecticut State University, and is the former Director of Theatre Arts at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Chandler, Arizona. She has received the KCACTF/ATHE Innovative Teaching Award, a Professional Development Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, and an Emerging Director Scholarship from the Celebration Barn in Maine. She holds a B.F.A. in Music Theatre Performance from Western Michigan University and a M.F.A. in Acting from Alabama Shakespeare Festival/University of Alabama.

“With these two dynamic, professional women, I look forward to growing SSC and realizing its tremendous potential,” said Fuller. “We now have the resources to expand our programming and engage more deeply with audiences, as well as offer comprehensive theatre training to young artists. Shakespeare’s plays are a vital, contemporary force, and we’re committed to using them as a means for building community and making sense of a complicated world.”

The Saratoga Shakespeare Company, founded in 2000, is Saratoga County’s only professional theatre company. Saratoga Shakespeare is a member of the International Shakespeare Theatre Association and is one of only four Equity Shakespeare companies in the country that provides free and open access productions in public parks.
